Carmichaelia australis R.Br., in J. Lindley, Bot. Reg. 11, t. 912 (1825)NZ Broom, Tawao, Makaka, Maukoro, Tainoka Derivation: Carmichaelia was named after Captain Dugald Carmichael, a Scottish army officer and botanist, from the island of Lismore, who collected plants in New Zealand; australis = southern The most recent studies of the genus Carmichaelia by Heenan have reverted to C. australis to include some 25 formerly recognised separate species and varieties. These are listed immediately following: Synonyms
Wilson and Galloway in Small Leaved Shrubs of New Zealand recognised that some re-evaluation of the genus was needed, made a tentative division into "common" and "sweet", and suggested that C cunninghamii was the earliest (1846) named genus that would suffice to deal with the "common" section, but Heenan has gone back to C. australis (1825) for a more comprehensive treatment Heenan contends that alleged species differences can be accounted for largely by a combination of location and soil type. He describes it as a species in the course of diversification. The revised species and it's range of forms is thoroughly described in the second of the two pdf files linked to this page, so no attempt has been made to provide the usual NZ Flora species references. These can be further investigated, if you wish, by following the links from "Carmichaelia" in the NZ Flora. Revision of Carmichaelia, part 1 and Revision of Carmichaelia part 2 Photographs on this page relate to young specimens found on Mt Auckland (Atuanui Reserve) north of Kaukapakapa.
